Succulents

About a month ago I bought a cute little succulent from Eastern Market here in DC. I've always been very bad at caring for plants, but the nice old man who sold it to me said I shouldn't have any problems since it only needs water when it looks like it's almost dying (i.e. very dry soil). He told me to dig my finger into the pot, and if it's all dry around the edges, that's when it's okay to water. Luckily for me, the only time I remember to water a plant is after it has already died, so this has been a total no-brainer thus far! Woo-hoo!

The little guy already grew out of its planter though, so I figured it was time for a transfer. Andrew and I walked to the hardware store near my house and picked up a bag of cactus mix from the garden section. When we got home, I sat out on the balcony and started to pick it up out of the dirt, but I'm guessing I was doing it wrong because Andrew quickly came outside and took over. Is it terrible that I've never really gardened before? Would you believe me if I told you my dad went to college for Horticulture? (Sorry, dad.)

I bought a little blue pot from a thrift store a few years ago thinking I'd buy a plant and use it, but that never happened and it sat around until it eventually turned into a place to store spare change. I'm glad I finally have a good excuse to use it now!

I have a feeling I'll have a nice little succulent collection sooner or later. They're just so cute and you really can't beat how low maintenance they are.

Do you have any succulents/plants?

  3. I was so bad with keeping plants, but now I have a ton around the house. I love the way they look! I have a table full of them by a window which makes it easy to remember to care for them. And I don't water them very often, really once a month unless they look droopy.

I started out with succulents and orchids, those are both easy to care for and beautiful.
